For sale is an original, loose mixed-media studio study by the celebrated British sculptor and artist Edwina Sandys (b. 1938). Famous for her massive international monuments (including Breakthrough at Westminster College) and her focus on figurative silhouettes, this piece represents a highly rare, intimate look into her 1980s experimental studio process.
- The Subject: Features a classic Sandys multi-figure composition depicting a "Three Heads" layout.
- The Medium: Confident, fluid line work rendered in a distinctive tawny-brown ink, punctuated by expressive, spontaneous splashes of vibrant colour washes.
- The Signature: Personally hand-initialled "ES" in pencil/ink in the bottom left-hand corner, typical of her internal working drafts and pre-production sketches.
IMPORTANT CONDITION REPORT – PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING:
This artwork was discovered in a charity shop in the North of England and is being sold strictly AS-IS in found, unrestored condition.
- Folds: The paper was unfortunately found folded into four. There are distinct, heavy horizontal and vertical crease lines running through the center of the artwork.
- Paper Integrity: The 1980s semi-translucent paper is delicate and brittle. There is minor weakening/fracturing along the fold lines and slight edge wear.
- Discoloration: Typical age-related yellowing and atmospheric toning to the paper sheet, which gives it a vintage, waxy appearance.
This is a phenomenal restoration project for a collector or a magnificent, raw piece of post-war British art history to frame exactly as it is.
